5. ¿Qué es un NFT (Token No Fungible)?

NFT es la sigla para el término en inglés Non-Fungible-Token, que significa Token No Fungible en español. Es un tipo de activo digital encriptado.

Pero, ¿qué significa que sean “no fungibles”?

La palabra “fungible” significa que una determinada cosa o bien se consume con el uso, pero también, cuando se usa en términos económicos significa que dicho bien está determinado sólo por su género y puede, por tanto, ser sustituido por otro, siempre que el género sea el mismo.

Por ejemplo, el dinero: un billete de $100 es intercambiable por cualquier otro billete de $100 o por dos billetes de $50, o 5 de $20.

Por el contrario, si es “no fungible” es que dicho bien no tiene paridad con otro.

Ahora bien, los NFT son activos únicos que no pueden modificarse ni cambiarse por otro que tenga el mismo valor. No hay dos NFT que sean iguales, aunque pertenezcan a la misma colección. Cada NFT representa algo único.

Por eso es que son muy asociados con el arte, porque algo similar pasa con los cuadros: no hay dos que tengan idéntico valor, porque son distintos.

Pero además, un NFT no puede ser dividido en partes más pequeñas que fragmenten su valor.

¿Cómo funcionan y cómo son creados?

Como todo el universo cripto, a través de la Blockchain y smart contracts. Sin embargo, el funcionamiento de los NFT puede variar según la plataforma blockchain donde se ejecuten.

De todas formas, los NFT funcionan con ciertos parámetros estandarizados debido a que la estructura más utilizada para crearlos es la que aporta la Blockchain de Ethereum, mediante los estándares ERC-721 y ERC-1155. Ambos estándares fueron muy adoptados por las facilidades que sus smart contracts dan a las plataformas NFT: permiten crear, modificar, transferir y destruir un NFT.

Una vez creado, cada NFT lleva consigo un certificado digital de autenticidad con metadatos que no pueden ser modificados. Allí figuran todas las transacciones en las que el activo estuvo presente y su autor, así como su valor de partida.

Estos tokens suelen verse en forma de coleccionables con un suministro muy limitado y con marcas únicas.

¿Para qué se usan?

La utilidad de los NFT, al igual que todo el ecosistema cripto, ha evolucionado conforme a su crecimiento.

En la actualidad, los NFT tienen varias posibilidades de uso:

  1. Socialización: Pueden ser un vehículo de socialización y de inclusión digital para formar parte de comunidades en las que la propiedad digital funciona como membresía
  2. Arte: Sirven para satisfacer la necesidad de expresión artística de quien lo posee
  3. Funcionalidades: Pueden tener aplicaciones específicas dentro de distintos universos, como el de gaming, música y organizaciones autónomas descentralizadas (DAO).
  4. Digitalización de activos: Estos activos tokenizados ofrecen derechos financieros e intereses sobre sí mismos.
